Pilonidal cysts develop in the skin overlying the tailbone, near the cleft of the buttocks. These cysts usually contain hair and skin debris. Patients who simply have a dimple or sinus tract that has not become infected or inflamed do not require any treatment.

Surgery is indicated when the cyst becomes acutely inflamed and infected (abscess) or if the patient suffers from chronic, recurrent, complicated disease.

SURGICAL INCISION and DRAINAGE - involves numbing the area with local anesthetic and making an incision over the infected cyst that allows it to drain. This procedure can usually be performed in the office or emergency room.

PILONIDAL CYSTECTOMY – involves removing the entire cyst, including any sinus, pit or dimple.
