Almost everyone has occasional heartburn (GERD) - that burning feeling in your chest or throat. It happens when gastric juices refluxes into your esophagus, the tube that transports food from your mouth to your stomach. Other symptoms include regurgitation and dysphagia. More than 60 million people have heartburn once a month and more than 15 million have it every day.

Certain foods and medications, alcohol, smoking, obesity and pregnancy can trigger heartburn. Lifestyle changes and medications usually help. But when they don't or if you develop complications from GERD, fundoplication surgery may be indicated.

FUNDOPLICATION - wrapping the upper segment of the stomach (fundus) around the lower end of the esophagus to strengthen it. Fundoplication is highly effective in resolving GERD and is especially recommended for those who do not respond well to medication, have complications from the reflux or do not wish to take GERD medication indefinite.
